Team managers message
The skills learnt in the life-skills program transfer readily to subjects taught through the school curriculum, for example Civics and Citizenship, Personal Learning Plan. That is, the program reinforces what is taught in class at school. In this way, the Ice Factor program impacts upon the whole staff at the school.
Students can also use their experiences and skill development as examples in a variety of subjects such as Physical Education, Drama (confidence, public speaking) and English.
Students become “natural” peer leaders and mentors to other students not in the program. The team as a whole has been presented to the school and serves as a fabulous role model to others including the Unit (intellectually disabled) students.
General fitness levels, an understanding of what is required to play a demanding sport and dietary habits have also improved.
Overall the effect of the Ice Factor program continues to be extremely positive. Social and organisational skills among the students involved have improved markedly. The ability to perform as a team and to support each other is great. Self-esteem has improved as has the students’ overall ability to articulate more readily and perform in front of their peers.
The school has an improved reputation due to the success of our students” involvement in the Ice Factor program.
